Hey girl, hey! Welcome back—or if you’re new here, welcome to the squad! Today, we’re diving into a full DIY crochet braids tutorial on how to install crochet human hair for a super natural, easy-to-maintain protective style.
I’ll be using the Ywigs Water Deep Crochet Human Hair, and let me just say… are you out of your mind? This hair is absolutely gorgeous. Let’s get into it!
For this crochet human hair install, I used 5 packs of the Ywigs Water Deep crochet human hair. The hair came beautifully packaged and was super simple to separate straight out of the pack—no tangles, no mess.
Each strand has a soft, natural texture that mimics real curls perfectly. If you’re looking for natural-looking crochet hair that blends effortlessly with your texture, this one delivers.
Texture: Water Deep Wave
Type: 100% Human Crochet Hair
Packs Used: 4–5 for full look
Time per Pack: ~30 minutes
For this install, I went with a side part, but you can adjust the depth depending on how you like your hair to fall.
The key to any crochet hair installation is a clean, flat braid pattern—it helps your loops sit smoothly and makes the style look natural.
If you want a deep side part, braid accordingly; if you prefer something closer to the middle, position your part that way from the start.
Let’s get into the actual crochet hair installation process!
Even if you’re new, don’t worry—I’ll walk you through it.
Insert your crochet needle through the braid.
Hook the hair onto the latch and pull it through.
Double loop the strand! This step is so important—it keeps the hair secure and makes removal easy later.
Pull the loop tight—but not too tight—to lock it in.
Pro tip: Always double loop your crochet human hair. It’s reusable, and this step helps protect your investment when uninstalling.
Once you’ve finished most of the back, use the crochet hook to fill in any visible gaps near the top or part line.
Crocheting between two braids (instead of just one) helps “close up” spaces and gives the illusion that the hair is growing straight from your scalp.
At the top, I used the no-leave-out crochet method, a favorite among protective hairstyles for Black women—you crochet hair into the two outer braids, then loop those into the inner ones to form a clean, natural-looking part.
Now that the install is complete, it’s time to bring those curls to life!
Here’s my go-to routine for defining crochet hair curls:
Spray the hair down with water.
Brush gently to detangle.
Add a lightweight mousse (I used The Doux Mousse, which gives excellent hold without crunch).
Finger-coil the ends for that perfect ringlet definition.
I left the top slightly more textured for volume and used more mousse toward the ends for poppin’ curls. Once everything’s set, let it air dry or diffuse if you prefer.
After four packs, I had the perfect density—full but not overwhelming. Three packs will work for a lighter look, but I love big, bouncy hair, so four was my sweet spot.
This human crochet hairstyle gives you all the benefits of braids—lightweight, protective, and low-maintenance—without the tension or long install time.
I work out five days a week, so having a quick “get up and go” protective style is a must. Even though it’s crocheted, my scalp feels free, and as the hair ages, it only looks better. The curls soften, volume builds, and it becomes even more natural with time.
100% human hair—soft, reusable, and natural
Beginner-friendly—perfect for first-time installers
Protective and breathable – scalp access for workouts or summer days
Versatile—wear it curly, brushed out, or wavy
This is easily one of my favorite crochet human hair styles because it gives that “is it a sew-in?” look without any leave-out or glue.
Big shoutout to Ywigs for sending over this gorgeous Water Deep crochet human hair to review and install. I’m obsessed with the texture, fullness, and how seamless the no-leave-out crochet method turned out.
